Enrolment Procedures

This page explains the procedures followed in the selection of students into Years 7 and 11 at St. Mary’s Cathedral College.

These procedures are those developed by Sydney Catholic Schools for systemic schools in the Archdiocese of Sydney.

At St Mary’s Cathedral College, we aim to create a Christian environment where parents and staff can join in promoting the growth of the Catholic faith in the students. We aim to develop the abilities of each student to the highest level, consistent with his ability.

We are not a selective school; however, we do celebrate the high academic achievements of our students. We also celebrate the achievements of those many non-elite students who make up the bulk of the school population.

The enrolment committee is consulted when decisions regarding enrolment need clarification. This committee consists of the College Principal, the College Deputy Principal, the College Promotions Officer, a parish representative and a parent.

It is expected that Catholic students will make up approximately 90% or more of the enrolment of the school. The Parish Reference Form is optional, although applicants who complete this form do have an advantage in the selection process.

Families who have established a family connection with the school, e.g. a brother in attendance or a parent as an ex-student, will also be advantaged in the selection process.
Enrolments are determined during the month of May in the year prior to commencement in Years 7 or 11.

Notification of selection for Year 7 will normally be received by early July. Students placed on a waiting list may be notified as late as November or December, of a placement for the next year.

A limited number of scholarships are available to students entering Year 11.

Priority of acceptance into Year 11 is given to students who, at present, attend Year 10 schools, e.g. Marist Catholic College Penshurst. The selection of students into Year 11 takes place in consultation with the Principal of the student’s current school.

A placement test for students entering Year 11 will be held on Tuesday 10th June 2017. The purpose of this diagnostic test is to provide information regarding the suitability of certain subjects and subject levels for each student. It is not part of the selection process.
